At Adapt Biogas, nurturing local talent is a key part of our mission to grow a sustainable, renewable energy sector. One of the best examples of this is Davy Walters a Murrow local whose journey from work experience student to an Engineering Operative Apprentice is already making an impact.
Davy first came to Adapt Biogas through a family connection with our Finance Director. What began as a short work experience placement quickly evolved into a Level 2 Engineering Operative Apprenticeship with the College of West Anglia’s Wisbech campus.
His programme involves four days a week working at our anaerobic digestion (AD) plant and one day a week in college, giving him the perfect blend of practical and classroom learning.
Before starting with us, Davy knew the farm had cows and that gas was produced on-site, but he didn’t yet understand how it all connected. Now, six months into his apprenticeship, he has a clear grasp of how feedstock, farm waste and organic materials are transformed into renewable biogas.
“It’s amazing once you see how everything links together,” he says. “I didn’t realise how clever and efficient the whole process is.”
Davy loves working outdoors, so being part of the farm and plant environment feels completely natural. He was told early on that no two days would ever be the same—and so far, that’s absolutely true.
For someone who doesn’t thrive in a traditional classroom, the hands-on format of the apprenticeship has been hugely rewarding. Every day brings new challenges, new skills and new experiences.
During his time with us so far, Davy has developed an impressive and diverse range of skills, including:
- contributing to weekly Monday meetings with plant and farm teams
- gaining knowledge in plumbing and onsite repairs
- gaining experience in electrical engineering tasks
- learning the operational processes of a working AD plant
- passing his driving test—another personal milestone
He’s also keen to continue developing electrical engineering skills after recognising how vital they are to the future of the renewable energy industry.
Davy’s apprenticeship runs until summer 2026, and he hopes a full-time role will follow. No matter where his path leads, he knows his time at Adapt Biogas will give him valuable experience, confidence and skills for life.
“I’ve learned so much already,” he says. “Everyone here tells me no question is a stupid question, and that makes it a great place to learn.”
Davy’s story highlights the value of hands-on learning and the importance of investing in local talent. Our Finance Director, Jenny Darroch commented:
“We’re proud to support Davy in his development and excited to see where his renewable energy career takes him next. We are delighted to see his progress so far.”
The College of West Anglia, Davy’s apprenticeship training college added:
“Through the maintenance pathway, he is developing a wide range of skills, including hand fitting techniques, maintaining mechanical devices, applying engineering health and safety, communicating technical information, and working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment.
At CWA, we recognise the vital role local employers play in helping to close regional skills gaps and strengthen our economy. Collaborating with businesses through apprenticeship programmers ensures that learners like Davy gain the specialist skills and real-world experience needed to thrive in their chosen industries. It is particularly encouraging to see renewable energy becoming part of this partnership, reflecting our shared commitment to developing a highly skilled workforce that supports a sustainable and innovative future.”
